What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Constipated? Bloated? Gassy? Overweight? Skin Issues?

When was the last time you gave your colon an internal bath?

colon image2The health of our colon is essential to our overall health. Scientists now refer to the colon as the second brain because of the role it plays in our mental and emotional states and disease.

The modern diet of refined foods and sugar, our sedentary lifestyle and stress have wrecked havoc on our colons. We are eating more sugar and processed foods than ever before in human history and overloading our system with various stimulants and sedatives. Additionally, we are exposed to thousands of toxins and chemicals at work and home, in the air we breathe, and in our food, water, and pharmaceutical drugs. By cleaning the colon with colon hydrotherapy, we decrease the general toxicity of our bodies and support our liver to function more efficiently. To the body, cleaning the colon is like a regular oil change in our car, and just as essential.

The colon is one of five organs of elimination in the body. It is a four-layer muscle – five-feet-long and two to three inches in diameter. Like any muscle, if it is not toned and working efficiently it will become sluggish and not perform optimally. If you are not eliminating about 12-18 inches at least once per day, then your colon is not working efficiently, and you may be constipated. Waste that remains too long in the intestines feeds harmful bacteria, causing putrefaction, fermentation, and leading to symptoms such as gas, bloating, headaches, fatigue, and skin problems. These waste products also can be reabsorbed into the blood stream, liver and kidneys. Over time this can lead to more serious health problems.

Nearly everyone can benefit from colon hydrotherapy. Colonics are an excellent and safe way of eliminating toxins from the body. The fewer toxins we have, the stronger our immune system and overall health. Colon hydrotherapy is a powerful tool for cleansing, detoxification and jumpstarting improvements in diet, lifestyle and exercise.

FAQ's

What to Expect

Your first visit will be an hour and a half. Your colon hydrotherapist will review the intake form with you, found here. Individualized colon health education will be provided, and all of your questions or concerns will be addressed.

After receiving coaching on using the colonic equipment, you will begin your 40-minute colonic session. View the video below, at right (insert direction) to see how the colonic works.

The final segment of the process is to allow your body to “drain” any excess water it may be holding. When the session is complete, you will dress and hydrate and refresh with mineral water, a probiotic beverage, or tea.

Subsequent sessions last about 40 minutes. We plan for one full hour in the colonic room to allow time for you to dress and ask questions. After your colonic you can resume your daily activities or go back to work just as you would after a regular bowel movement.

What can I do before and after the colonic?

Before Your Colonic:
Drink plenty of water the day before to hydrate the body and colon. Refrain from eating about 2 hours before the colon hydrotherapy Avoid coffee and carbonated beverages as they can make you more gassy and acidic, which can cause cramping Be as relaxed as possible and maintain a positive, cheerful attitude.
We recommend a 15- or 30-minute SOQI Spa session prior to your colonic. The SOQI Spa stimulates lymphatic circulation and tones the colon while oxygenating the entire body. The warming, quiet, meditative session prepares the mind, emotions, and body for the cleansing colonic experience.

After Your Colonic:
Eat healthy food such as nourishing soups, fruits chewed well, or steamed vegetables.  Juiced and/or blended raw vegetables (like a green smoothie) are great. Avoid alcohol, spicy bean dishes, heavy animal protein, dairy, and sweets especially. Based on each individual’s health and digestion, we may recommend supportive supplements, such as minerals, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. If you are on a cleanse or have specific constipation issues, we may suggest temporarily using herbs to support movement

What is the difference between a colonic, colon hydrotherapy, and colonic irrigation?

All of these terms describe the cleansing of the colon. We use the terms interchangeably but most often say “colonics.”

What kind of equipment do you use?

We use the Angel of Water because of its safety, efficiency, elegance, and simplicity. Registered with the FDA as a medical device, it features a sterile, disposable rectal nozzle and state-of-the-art ultraviolet water filtration. See an animated demonstration video of colon hydrotherapy using the Angel of Water here.

Is it embarrassing?

The procedure is performed with modesty for both the client and colon hydrotherapist. A cover cloth is provided so that clients always maintain their privacy. The devices at Cleansing Waters are designed to be “self operating,” meaning that once you are properly coached and aware of the procedure, you control the process. The technician may remain present or you may prefer privacy. Tips on breathing techniques, aromatherapy, and soothing background music all contribute to a pleasant visit.

How many colonics do I need?

The number of colonics you need depends on your goals, intestinal health, dietary habits and lifestyle. Many of us have a considerable amount of impacted waste in our colon, accompanied by muscle, nerve, immune and hormone deficits. Second and subsequent colonics may release more material as your body tunes into releasing, muscles become suppler, the area becomes more hydrated and bacterial/fungal sources of nerve damage are reduced.

Occasionally after the first colonic, people experience a headache or bloating, depending on their level of toxicity. These can be alleviated by having a second colonic 24 to 72 hours after the first. You will feel more relaxed and the hydration will allow more waste to be eliminated.

One or two colonics may be all that is necessary to recover from travel, flu, fever, back pain or headache, transient constipation or a small fast or cleanse. However, overcoming lifelong constipation, redundancy, chronic illness or to create consistently healthy bowel habits and vitality may require regular colonics for some time. We usually recommend an initial series of 10-12 colonics, especially for constipation treatment or if you have a chronic condition that has built up over years. Adopting recommended dietary and lifestyle modifications may reduce the number of colonics or frequency of treatments.

Are colonics safe?

This is a common question. Colon hydrotherapy is very safe, especially when performed by a certified colon therapist. The water is introduced at a low gravitational pressure level, so there is no danger of bowel perforation. All equipment is either disposable or disinfected using hospital-grade disinfectant solutions, which kill all viruses, bacteria, or fungi. The rectal nozzle is only entered into the first 1½ to 2 inches of the rectum so there is no risk of perforating the bowel. We use filtered and purified water.

Some people are concerned they will become dependent on colonics for regular elimination. The opposite is true. Because colon therapy exercises the colon, it creates better peristalsis (muscle contraction) and actually tones the colon to function and eliminate better independently. Unlike laxatives, colon therapy is not habit forming.

How much of the intestines are actually cleansed during a colon hydrotherapy treatment?

It varies upon the individual.  Hydration levels, health of the colon, stress and anxiety around the procedure, and the amount of waste will factor into how far and how much is eliminated in those first two colonics. After a series it is possible to cleanse the entire length of the colon during a professionally administered session.

The small intestine is not specifically involved; however, the small intestine may be cleansed with the help of an oral intestinal cleanser.

Unlike enemas, which reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon, colon hydrotherapy can reach the entire length of the colon and is many more times effective. According to centenarian Dr. Norman Walker, “one colon irrigation is equivalent to 30 enemas.”

What are the potential side effects of colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy will cleanse the good and bad bacteria from the bowel – but so does a regular bowel movement. Because we are cleansing large amounts of toxins and fecal matter from the bowel, the environment to re-establish the good bacteria is much stronger. Nutrient absorption is also considerably better in a clean environment than a putrefied one. We believe it is important to take probiotics (good bacteria) after receiving colonics and as part of your daily regimen.

If there is a full release during your session, it is possible that you may not have a bowel movement the next day, as your colon has been emptied of most solid waste. This does not mean that you are constipated. On the other hand, if you do not fully release during a session there may be residual water in your colon that you will release later in the day as an additional bowel movement. Occasionally some people will temporarily experience a slight headache or fatigue due to detoxification, which is why we recommend two initial colonics. Most clients feel much lighter and more energetic after colon therapy.

Some people are concerned that colon hydrotherapy will be painful. Yet, many people report their colon hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing. At the start of the procedure, you may experience a “strange” sensation of wanting to go to the toilet, but most people get used to this feeling in the first few minutes. Occasionally an individual will feel cramping prior to a release due to gas or wastes moving down the intestinal tract. The cramping will only last a few moments. Drinking soda and coffee can increase cramping and discomfort.

Contraindications for the use of the Angel of Water include, but are not limited to: recent colon, rectal or abdominal surgery; congestive heart failure; intestinal perforations; carcinoma of the rectum; fissures or fistula; severe hemorrhoids; abdominal hernia; renal insufficiency; first or last trimester of pregnancy; and cirrhosis of the liver. Professionally administered colon hydrotherapy is otherwise very safe.

If you have a concern about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy for you, please consult your physician or licensed healthcare practitioner.

Can I have a colonic if I am menstruating, pregnant, or nursing?

For some people menstruation a good time for a session since the body is already cleansing. However, some women prefer to wait until after their period. We recommend that you not use a tampon during your colonic session.

Colonics are not contraindicated if you are between three and six months’ pregnant. They are not recommended during the first or third trimester.

After childbirth, wait at least six weeks before receiving a colonic. A colonic is much better than a laxative if you are nursing since everything you consume passes through the breast milk to the baby.

Will I lose weight after a colonic?

You will lose waste. Ridding the body of excess waste helps your body to metabolize more efficiently. You will become more conscious of what foods you are putting in to your body and how your body processes those foods. Many clients improve their diet and exercise regime when they start receiving colonics.

Are colonics covered by my medical insurance?

Unfortunately, no. Some flex-spending healthcare plans do cover colon hydrotherapy. Check with your provider.
